Turkish authorities have ceased active searches for Russian swimmer Nikolai Svechnikov in the waters of the Bosphorus Strait. The Russian consulate in Istanbul clarified that the gendarmerie continues to work on establishing his whereabouts.

“Active searches for the swimmer in the Bosphorus have been halted, but the gendarmerie is still looking for any traces; the investigation is not over,” said the diplomats.

The athlete’s mother previously announced a reward of 500,000 lira for information about her son’s fate. The swimmer’s relatives have filed an official complaint against the event organizers, demanding the initiation of a criminal case.

The 29-year-old candidate for the title of Master of Sports went missing on August 24 during an intercontinental swim. His absence at the finish line was only noticed after several hours. Representatives of the organizing committee stated earlier that the event was conducted in compliance with all safety measures.
